We are excited to announce that we’re working with Meena Murugesan as a guest choreographer in a new web-based creative process exploring the queering of abhinaya. Check out our blog to see what we’re cooking up!
Meena is currently completing her MFA degree in choreography at UCLA’s Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance and is working on further developing ’we used to see this’, a contemporary bharata natyam installation that re-choreographs the form’s multiple presentation modes and audience-performer relationships through the triangulation of proscenium, salon, and temple. She is also performing in Carol McDowell’s improvisational score, ’this I know to be true … ’ at the Looking Left Festival in Santa Cruz.
We are also happy celebrate the completion of Cabaret Travels , our long-distance creative exchange with Delhi-based director, Aditee Biswas. To mark the end of the project, Shyamala created a guide that sums up Post Natyam’s long-distance collaborative process in 7 easy steps for the NET/TEN Shareback Library. You can also check out other wonderful insights into ensemble process by NET/TEN grantees at the NET/TEN Shareback Library.
In other news, in April Sandra is presenting a paper on choreographic articulations between European and Indian dance at the symposium, ’Dazwischen und Darueber Hinaus’ in Munich. Shyamala is joining TeAda Productions for a Global Taxi Driver Project residency at Intermedia Arts in Minneapolis in April, and she is the project director for Pop-Up TeAda, where restaurant workers and performers team up for pop-up performances around Southern CA. Shyamala and Cynthia will be performing ’rapture/rupture’ in the Los Angeles Women’s Theater Festival in March. They are also working on expanding Super Ruwaxi: Origins into a full-length show, for which they have just completed an inspiring script-writing intensive with dramaturg Alison De La Cruz.

In ’rapture/rupture,’ the intimate and bittersweet rapture of poetic love-in-separation is reinterpreted through cultural and gendered difference using contemporary abhinaya. ’rapture/rupture’ features dance by Cynthia Ling Lee, choreographic direction and vocal accompaniment by Shyamala Moorty, original music by Ravindra Deo, and dramaturgy by Sandra Chatterjee. It was developed as part of Post Natyam’s 29 Subversive Gestures Theory-Choreography Loop
