The Post Natyam Collective explores contemporary Indian dance, performance and video on a continuum of tradition and innovation, theory and aesthetics, art and activism. The collective currently consists of co-founders Sandra Chatterjee (Germany/India), Shyamala Moorty (USA), Anjali Tata (USA) and newest additon, Sangita Shresthova (Nepal/Czech Republic). The four met during their graduate studies at the Department of World Arts and Cultures at the University of California, Los Angeles. They use their diverse artistic backgrounds, which include training in Bharata Natyam, Kuchipudi, Modern/Postmodern dance, Polynesian dance, Yoga, theater, and video to create thought provoking performances, workshops and lectures that address contemporary issues facing women with transnational identities (South Asian, American, and European).

  • To embrace collaboration and explore themes relevant to our post-modern, post-colonial reality-such as femininity, religious fundamentalism, nationalism, ethnic identity, transcultural complications, and exotification.
  • To expand the field of possibilities and opportunities for dancers beyond strict dichotomies of tradition vs.innovation and east vs. west by continuously interrogating the political pasts and the potential (con)fusions within and between different movement forms.
  • To forge new pathways for professional opportunities to present Contemporary Indian Dance and Performance and encourage its growth the international arena.
  • To interact with diverse audiences through performances, workshops, and lecture demonstrations.
